UK status

MHRA approved Wegovy tablets for weight management in June 2026 and Foundayo for weight management and type 2 diabetes in August 2026. Approval does not guarantee NHS funding, eligibility for everyone or steady pharmacy stock. A clinical assessment still decides whether a medicine suits you. Use the UK dates. US or EU approval dates do not apply here.

The morning routine differs

Oral semaglutide needs an empty stomach, a small amount of water and a wait before food, drink or other tablets. Foundayo has no such food and water rules. For shift workers or people juggling several medicines, that difference matters. Convenience varies from person to person, and both tablets still need taking every day.

Why you cannot compare their milligrams

Semaglutide is a peptide. Orforglipron is a small-molecule GLP-1 receptor agonist. The printed strengths reflect different molecules and formulations and share no common scale. A higher or lower milligram figure tells you nothing about which is "stronger". When you read old dose descriptions, check whether they refer to trial formulations or the commercial tablet.

What the main trials show

OASIS 4 tested oral semaglutide against placebo. ATTAIN-1 tested orforglipron against placebo. Both found more weight loss on the active treatment. They were separate trials with different designs and lengths, so their percentages give no head-to-head ranking. Indirect comparisons rely on assumptions and fall short of a trial that randomises one group of people to the two tablets.

A tablet is still a serious medicine

Both tablets can cause side effects and need a check of your medical history and other medicines. Ask about stomach and bowel symptoms, dehydration, pregnancy plans, other glucose-lowering medicines and interactions specific to each product. A tablet is easy to store and carry, and that says nothing about whether it suits you. Do not take both tablets together or add one to a weekly GLP-1 injection on your own.

Pick a plan you can keep up

Compare the routine you will follow in real life, the ongoing cost, the clinical support on offer and the plan if treatment stops for a while. Ask what will be reviewed and when, including side effects and wider health goals. If you switch, get specific instructions. Neither pill is a straight replacement for the other. The comparison here helps you prepare for that conversation. Your prescriber decides with you which medicine fits.

Compare costs at the maintenance dose

An introductory price may cover a starter strength only. The long-term cost depends on the maintenance treatment you are prescribed. Compare the same length of supply and include consultation, delivery and any repeat reviews. A daily tablet pack and a four-dose weekly pen may cover different numbers of days. Be open about cost, because an unaffordable plan leads to gaps in treatment. Weigh cost alongside clinical suitability and how you prefer to take your medicine, and never use it to justify an unsupervised switch.

Your own medicine leaflet and prescriber come first. A source from another country does not mean the same rule applies in the UK.
