Start with the BASG register

The Austrian medicine register lists authorised products and their product information. Search by ingredient as well as brand and note the dosage form. Ask the supplying pharmacist to show which entry matches the actual pack. A company may promote a medicine internationally before every local presentation is available. A foreign launch announcement says nothing about stock or reimbursement in Austria.

Eligibility and reimbursement are separate decisions

A clinician assesses whether treatment suits your condition and circumstances. Your payer then decides whether to meet the cost. Ask which indication is being prescribed, what documents are needed and whether follow-up is part of the funded service. If you pay yourself, ask for an itemised quote for the medicine, consultation, dispensing and any recurring membership before you sign up to a programme.

Plan any cross-border collection

If you plan to collect medicine while travelling through Austria, check the pharmacy accepts your prescription and has the right presentation before you book your trip around the purchase. A foreign electronic prescription may not be visible to the pharmacy. For onward travel to a non-EU country, read that country's import rules separately. Carry the original packaging and relevant clinical documents. Do not buy more than your prescription or your destination's allowance permits.

Winter and summer bring different storage risks

Ask the pharmacist how to protect your exact product in transit. An injection left in a freezing vehicle may suffer as much as one exposed to excessive heat. Do not place a pen directly against an ice pack unless the approved transport arrangement protects the pen. If you are unsure whether the medicine stayed within its required conditions, keep the packaging and ask for a professional assessment before use.

Before you buy in Austria

Check the current BASG register entry before you buy. Confirm the exact product and indication for Mounjaro, Wegovy injection, Wegovy tablets or Foundayo. In Austria, authorisation, prescription, reimbursement, stock and personal import permission each need their own answer.

  • Ask a clinician in Austria which product suits you and whether your existing treatment history is enough for an assessment.
  • Find out the complete cost, including consultations, dispensing and delivery, before you agree to ongoing treatment.
  • Keep identifiable packaging, the prescription and the dispensing record. If a parcel is damaged or storage is in doubt, ask the pharmacist before you use the medicine.

Sources

Your own medicine leaflet and prescriber come first. A source from another country does not mean the same rule applies in the UK.
