Keep the brand and its licensed use clear

Semaglutide comes in more than one branded product. Rybelsus and Ozempic have their own prescribing information. The Wegovy tablet label covers adult weight management. Sharing semaglutide does not make the brands or their licensed uses interchangeable.

If you are an eligible adult with type 2 diabetes, you may receive Wegovy tablets for weight management. The decision should fit your existing diabetes plan, with your prescriber and diabetes team talking to each other. Do not replace a diabetes medicine because another product contains the same ingredient.

Glucose and eye monitoring

The label warns of hypoglycaemia risk when semaglutide is taken with insulin or a sulfonylurea. Your clinician may need to adjust those medicines and explain how to monitor. Semaglutide does not replace insulin where you need insulin.

If you have diabetic retinopathy, you need the right eye monitoring, especially when your glucose improves fast. Get new eye symptoms checked. Do not put them down to changing glucose without a check. Sudden loss of vision, including partial loss, is urgent and appears in the semaglutide safety warnings too.

Know what to do when you are ill

A diabetes sick-day plan should explain glucose monitoring, fluids, when to get help and what to do with each prescribed medicine. Each medicine has its own sick-day rules. Do not assume general advice about a GLP-1 medicine applies to insulin, metformin or an SGLT2 inhibitor.

Get prompt advice for vomiting, being unable to keep fluids down, severe weakness, confusion or other worrying symptoms. If you take insulin, do not stop without medical advice. Bring your full medicine list when you seek urgent care so the team can judge the combined effect of illness and treatment.

Judge benefit beyond the scales

HbA1c shows your average glucose over time and differs from a single glucose reading. Weight, symptoms, hypoglycaemia, the effort of treatment and heart risk factors add to the picture. A medicine that lowers a number but causes repeated dangerous lows needs a rethink.

Keep up routine diabetes care, including eye screening, foot care and the monitoring agreed with your team. Weight loss does not remove all risk of complications. If you change treatment privately, make sure your usual diabetes service gets an accurate update so reviews and prescriptions stay joined up.

When NHS and private clinicians share your care, keep the arrangements joined up. Agree who orders HbA1c tests, reviews glucose records and changes your other medicines. Without a named lead, each service may think the other has seen an important result, or prescriptions may carry on after the plan has changed.

Questions to take to your appointment

Ask why your prescriber chose Wegovy tablets for weight management alongside your diabetes, and how your current treatment will change. Confirm who handles glucose monitoring and eye concerns, and who tells your usual diabetes team about changes.
