The shared active ingredient

Zepbound and Mounjaro both contain tirzepatide, which acts on GIP and GLP-1 receptors. The shared ingredient links the research. The boxes, devices and leaflets still differ. Each country's authorisation sets the licensed uses and product information. Treat US adverts and American patient forums as background only, never as instructions for a UK Mounjaro prescription.

Why the US uses two names

In the United States, Mounjaro is the type 2 diabetes brand and Zepbound is the weight-management brand. UK Mounjaro is authorised for type 2 diabetes and for weight management in eligible people. This branding split explains why the same tirzepatide trial can turn up under a different medicine name in international news. UK patients do not need imported Zepbound to get obesity treatment.

The sleep apnoea indication

The FDA approved Zepbound for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnoea in adults with obesity, alongside diet and physical activity. That decision applies to the US authorisation. Do not read it as UK funding, and do not stop CPAP on your own. Sleep apnoea needs specialist assessment. Feeling better does not prove your breathing problems during sleep have gone.

Pens, vials and access differ

US presentations and payment schemes can differ from UK ones. A video showing a vial or an American pen may not match a UK KwikPen. Coupons, insurance cover and direct-supply programmes all vary by country. Judge a UK service on its prescribing, dispensing and follow-up. Trying to copy a US promotional offer will not help.

Safety advice follows tirzepatide

The main safety points are stomach and bowel side effects, dehydration and how treatment interacts with insulin or sulfonylureas. The UK information for tirzepatide also gives specific advice about oral contraception. Bring a list of all your medicines and any pregnancy plans to the assessment. Never use Zepbound and Mounjaro together. Two brands of the same ingredient still double the dose.

Compare evidence by molecule and dose

Look past the brand name to the molecule, dose, trial population and outcome. The SURMOUNT trials study tirzepatide, and each one answers its own question. A claim about average weight loss is a different thing from evidence on heart events or sleep apnoea. Your prescriber should link the relevant evidence to a currently authorised product and tell you where the uncertainty lies.

Translate the terms, leave the prescription to your prescriber

US sources often use different glucose units, brand names and insurance terms from UK services. A familiar research finding may still be relevant to you, but your practical instructions must match the product you receive. If an American article raises a question, take the source to your UK prescriber and ask which part applies. Do not change your device, buy an imported presentation or alter your monitoring because the same ingredient appears in a US story.

Sources

Your own medicine leaflet and prescriber come first. A source from another country does not mean the same rule applies in the UK.
