What reflux feels like
Acid reflux happens when stomach contents move up into the oesophagus. You typically feel burning behind the breastbone and notice a sour taste. Burping, bloating and an irritated throat are common too. Wegovy can cause digestive symptoms, but the pattern alone does not prove Wegovy is the only cause.
Note whether symptoms follow meals, get worse when you lie down or started after a dose increase. Also record anti-inflammatory painkillers, alcohol, smoking and anything else that may contribute. Describe what happens in plain terms. Not every unpleasant burp means acid damage.
Practical changes
Eat smaller meals and avoid lying down soon after eating. Leave a gap before bed instead of eating a large meal late in the evening. If one food sets off symptoms every time, cut back on that food. There is no need to drop whole food groups.
Some people find raising the head of the bed helps. Piling up pillows bends you at the waist and works less well. Avoid tight clothes that press on your stomach. Keep the changes comfortable and realistic. You want relief while still eating enough.
Short-term treatment
A pharmacist may recommend an antacid or alginate after checking your other medicines and conditions. These products can affect the timing of other tablets, so follow the instructions for each one. Taking an over-the-counter remedy for weeks without review can hide an ongoing problem.
A clinician may consider acid-suppressing treatment or investigate persistent symptoms. Tell them you use Wegovy, with your dose and any recent changes, and give them your full medicine history. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own because reflux appeared at the same time.
Chest symptoms may be your heart
Call 999 for chest pressure or heaviness with breathlessness, sweating, feeling seriously unwell or pain spreading to your arm, jaw, back or neck. People with a history of heartburn still have heart attacks. Feeling better after an antacid does not rule out a heart problem.
Difficulty swallowing, food sticking, repeated vomiting, blood in your vomit or black tarry stools also need medical assessment. Eating too little and losing weight you did not plan to lose is a warning sign, even though weight loss was the aim of treatment.
Reflux and your Wegovy plan
Contact your prescriber if symptoms are frequent, disturb your sleep or make eating difficult. Your dose increases may need review. A higher dose will not fix ongoing digestive problems.
Tell the team about Wegovy before any anaesthetic or deep sedation, especially if you have nausea, reflux or vomiting. GLP-1 medicines can leave food in the stomach even after the usual fasting period, and the procedure team needs the full picture. Comfort, sleep and eating well count as much as the scales when you judge whether treatment suits you.
