Constipation or less stool?

Eating less means your body makes less stool. Going less often for that reason differs from painful, hard or difficult bowel movements. Compare with your usual pattern. Note whether you strain, feel bloated or cannot empty your bowels comfortably.

A simple bowel record is enough to start a useful conversation: dates, stool consistency, discomfort and any laxative you used. Do not assume a sudden, lasting change comes from Wegovy, especially if you see blood or notice other new symptoms.

Start with simple changes

Drink fluids regularly and add dietary fibre a little at a time over several days. Fruit, vegetables, oats and other fibre you tolerate can fit into smaller meals. A sudden jump in fibre when you are already bloated, dehydrated or badly constipated may make the discomfort worse.

Gentle activity and a regular toilet routine help too. Go when you feel the urge and give yourself enough time. Some people find a footstool that lifts the knees above the hips makes passing stool easier. These steps support your bowels but give no guarantee you will avoid medication.

Ask a pharmacist about laxatives

If simple changes do not work, ask a pharmacist which treatment suits your symptoms and other conditions. Laxatives work in different ways. Stacking up products because the first one has not worked straight away can cause problems. Stick to the recommended amount and expected timing.

Tell the pharmacist about kidney disease, a fluid limit, a possible pregnancy and your other medicines, especially opioid painkillers, iron or anything else that causes constipation. If constipation keeps coming back, your prescriber should review your whole medicine and eating pattern. Repeat prescriptions for symptom relief on their own are not enough.

Bowel symptoms that need prompt care

Severe or worsening abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting or being unable to pass wind need urgent assessment. Stop adding fibre or laxatives and do not assume this is simple constipation. Bowel obstruction and other acute problems need different treatment.

Blood in your stool, a lasting change in bowel habit, recurring abdominal pain or constipation that is not improving all need a medical review. You can still develop an unrelated bowel condition while taking a weight-loss medicine. Planned weight loss should not hide other warning signs.

Constipation and dose increases

If constipation is significant, tell your Wegovy prescriber before your next dose increase. A plan is easier to make before symptoms become severe. Your clinician may slow the increase, arrange treatment or look for another cause.

Watery leakage does not always mean constipation has cleared. Liquid stool can sometimes pass around a hard, impacted mass. Describe the full sequence if hard stools are followed by leakage. Do not judge progress by the scales alone, because bowel contents shift your weight for a while without any change in body fat. Comfortable bowel function is a worthwhile treatment goal in its own right.
